About Algorand
Algorand is a proof-of-stake blockchain launched in 2019 by Turing Award winner and MIT cryptographer Silvio Micali. It uses a pure proof-of-stake consensus that randomly selects block proposers and committees from all token holders, providing fast finality and resistance to forks without slashing penalties. Algorand emphasizes carbon-neutral operation, low and predictable fees, and instant transaction finality measured in a few seconds. ALGO is the native token used for fees and participation in consensus. The platform supports smart contracts written in TEAL or higher-level languages, and has been adopted for tokenized assets, central bank digital currency pilots, supply chain projects and decentralized finance applications.
