About Ethereum
Ethereum is an open-source blockchain platform launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and a team of co-founders. Unlike Bitcoin, which focuses on payments, Ethereum was designed as a programmable network where developers deploy smart contracts and decentralized applications. Its native token, ether (ETH), is used to pay transaction fees called gas. In 2022 the network completed The Merge, switching from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake and dramatically reducing its energy use. Ethereum hosts most of the activity in decentralized finance, NFTs, stablecoins and tokenization, and serves as the settlement layer for a growing ecosystem of layer-2 scaling networks.
