About Hedera
Hedera is a public distributed ledger that went live in 2019, built around the hashgraph consensus algorithm invented by Leemon Baird. Unlike traditional blockchains, hashgraph uses a gossip-about-gossip protocol and virtual voting to achieve fast, fair, asynchronous Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus with predictable low fees. The network is governed by the Hedera Council, a rotating group of large enterprises and universities that operate the initial set of permissioned nodes, with plans for broader permissionless participation. HBAR is the native cryptocurrency used to pay for transactions, smart contracts, file storage and the consensus and token services that enterprises and developers build on top of the network.
