About Avalanche
Avalanche is a proof-of-stake smart contract platform launched in 2020 by Ava Labs, founded by Cornell professor Emin Gün Sirer and his team. It uses a novel consensus family that lets large validator sets reach finality in roughly one second through repeated random sampling. The platform is structured around three built-in chains for asset transfers, smart contracts and validator coordination, and supports custom layer-1 networks called subnets that can define their own rules and validators. The native token, AVAX, is used for staking, fees and securing the network. AVAX has a capped supply, and a portion of every transaction fee is burned.
