About Cardano
Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform that launched its mainnet in 2017, founded by Charles Hoskinson, one of the original Ethereum co-founders. The project is notable for its research-driven development process, with protocol upgrades published as peer-reviewed academic papers. Its native token, ADA, is used for staking, governance and transaction fees. Cardano uses the Ouroboros consensus algorithm and a layered architecture that separates value transfer from smart contract execution. Smart contract functionality went live with the Alonzo upgrade in 2021. The network targets use cases ranging from decentralized finance to identity and supply chain in emerging markets, particularly across Africa.
