About Filecoin
Filecoin is a decentralized storage network launched in 2020 after one of the largest token sales of 2017, led by Protocol Labs and Juan Benet. It turns spare disk space worldwide into a marketplace where clients pay storage providers in FIL to keep their data and prove they continue to do so over time. Two cryptographic mechanisms, proof-of-replication and proof-of-spacetime, let the network verify that providers are storing unique copies of data. Filecoin works closely with the InterPlanetary File System and is used for archival storage, NFT metadata, scientific datasets and Web3 applications, offering an alternative to centralized cloud providers.
