About Litecoin
Litecoin is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies, launched in October 2011 by former Google engineer Charlie Lee as a fork of the Bitcoin codebase. It was designed to complement Bitcoin by offering faster block times, around two and a half minutes, and a different proof-of-work hashing algorithm called Scrypt that aimed to be more accessible to consumer hardware. Often described as silver to Bitcoin gold, Litecoin retains a fixed supply cap of 84 million coins and has historically been used to test upgrades such as Segregated Witness and the Lightning Network before they were deployed on Bitcoin. It remains widely supported by exchanges and payment processors.
