About Polkadot
Polkadot is a multi-chain proof-of-stake protocol launched in 2020 by the Web3 Foundation and co-founder Gavin Wood, formerly a co-founder and CTO of Ethereum. It connects independent blockchains, called parachains, to a shared central relay chain that provides security and cross-chain messaging. This architecture lets specialized chains for finance, identity, gaming or privacy interoperate without trusting bridges. The native token, DOT, is used for staking, governance and bonding parachain slots. Polkadot relies on a nominated proof-of-stake system where validators are chosen by token-holding nominators, and on-chain governance allows the network to upgrade itself without contentious hard forks.
