Coinbase's AI-powered news alert system mistakenly announced a false World Cup result before the match started, sparking backlash and raising questions about the reliability of automated news in crypto platforms.

Coinbase AI blunder sends fake World Cup alert before match starts

Coinbase sent users a false “breaking news” alert on Sunday, claiming Norway's soccer team had beaten Brazil 3-2 in a World Cup knockout match before the game had even started. The alert, generated by the exchange's AI-powered news system, said Erling Haaland scored twice at MetLife Stadium. At the time, Coinbase's own prediction-market page still listed the match as weather-delayed.

The incident highlights the risks of relying on AI for real-time news distribution in the crypto space. Users posted screenshots of the notification on X, with one showing the alert was sent at 10:26 a.m. ET, while the match didn't start until 4 p.m. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged the issue, replying that he was looking into it. Max Branzburg, the company's head of consumer & business products, later confirmed the incorrect story was fixed.

For crypto traders, this event underscores the importance of verifying news sources before making trading decisions. Automated alerts can spread misinformation rapidly, potentially triggering unwarranted market moves. Traders can monitor live crypto prices on NowPrice's dashboard to stay informed with accurate data. Going forward, Coinbase may need to implement stricter safeguards on its AI-generated content to maintain user trust and prevent similar errors.
