Prometheum bets broker-dealers are key to tokenized securities adoption

Prometheum is betting that the next phase of tokenized finance will be won not by crypto exchanges, but by traditional broker-dealers and registered investment advisers (RIAs).

"The story of tokenization so far has been about issuance, but no one has addressed the challenge of how to get those products to mainstream investors," Aaron Kaplan, co-founder and co-CEO of Prometheum, told CoinDesk in an interview. "Until tokenized and digitally-native securities can reach investors through the broker-dealer channels they already use, tokenization is a solution without a market."

Tokenized securities are traditional financial assets such as stocks, bonds or funds that are issued and traded on blockchain networks. While several platforms have emerged to issue such assets, distribution has remained a bottleneck. Prometheum, which operates a special-purpose broker-dealer licensed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), aims to bridge this gap by leveraging existing Wall Street infrastructure. The firm believes that integrating tokenized products into the same channels used for conventional securities—such as brokerage accounts and advisory platforms—will unlock demand from institutional and retail investors alike.

For cryptocurrency and digital asset traders, this development highlights a growing convergence between traditional finance (TradFi) and blockchain-based markets. If Prometheum's thesis proves correct, it could accelerate the adoption of tokenized assets, potentially increasing liquidity and price discovery for on-chain securities. This may also influence how crypto-native platforms compete for market share, as regulatory clarity and distribution networks become key differentiators. Looking ahead, the success of Prometheum's strategy will depend on regulatory developments and the willingness of broker-dealers to integrate blockchain-based products. Key events to watch include any SEC guidance on tokenized securities, partnerships with major RIAs, and the launch of pilot programs that test investor demand. The broader market will also track whether other firms follow Prometheum's model, potentially reshaping the landscape for digital asset distribution.
