UK retail sales miss, German IFO and US data in focus

UK retail sales missed expectations across the board but had little impact on BoE rate expectations, while traders now await the German IFO survey and Canadian retail sales for further direction.

UK retail sales miss, German IFO and US data in focus

UK retail sales for April missed expectations across the board, with the monthly figure falling to -0.3% versus the consensus of 0.2%, and the prior month revised lower. The data, however, did little to shift the market's view on the Bank of England's policy path, as the central bank has already signaled a cautious approach amid sticky services inflation. The muted reaction in sterling and gilt yields reflected that the numbers were not seen as game-changing for the BoE's rate outlook.

For traders focused on interest rates and central bank policy, the lack of a strong market response underscores how deeply priced the current BoE expectations are. The focus now shifts to the German IFO Business Climate index, due later in the European session. The IFO is closely correlated with the German Composite PMI, as both measure similar economic conditions. The Business Climate index is expected to edge down to 84.2 from 84.4, but given that the ECB's policy outlook remains stable, any deviation is unlikely to trigger significant moves. Looking ahead, the American session brings Canadian retail sales and the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment data. Canadian retail sales are expected to rise 0.6% month-on-month, down from 0.7% prior, while the Michigan sentiment reading will be watched for any revision to the preliminary print. These releases could provide short-term direction for USD/CAD and US Treasury yields, but the overall market may remain range-bound until the next major central bank meeting or data surprise.
