Oil prices dip as US-Iran talks raise supply hopes

Oil prices declined on Thursday as traders focused on the potential for increased supply from the Middle East following indirect talks between the United States and Iran in Doha. Brent crude futures fell 0.7% to $71.10 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped 0.7% to $68.12 a barrel at 08:20 GMT.

The latest round of negotiations, hosted by Qatar, concluded after two days of technical discussions without a comprehensive agreement. However, Qatari officials described the talks as constructive, signaling that progress may be possible. The prospect of eased sanctions on Iranian oil exports has weighed on prices, as Iran holds significant spare production capacity that could add to global supply. For fuel traders, any increase in Iranian crude flows would likely pressure refining margins and widen the Brent-WTI spread, as Iranian crude is similar in quality to medium-sour grades. Looking ahead, markets will monitor whether further diplomatic rounds yield a tangible deal. Traders should also watch for weekly U.S. inventory data from the Energy Information Administration, which could provide additional cues on demand and supply balances. Any escalation in geopolitical tensions elsewhere in the Middle East, however, could quickly reverse the current supply-driven price weakness.
